The thing that particularly stands out to me is the fact that Britta is a progressive character. ![]() She still has the occasional episode where she comes off looking good, (and season 5 was, overall, one of her better seasons), but the general trend is clear. Part of the joke in Family Guy is that Meg clearly doesn’t deserve the abuse she’s getting, whereas by the final season of Community, Britta is characterized as a spoiled loser with no self-awareness. (“Man, you really britta’d that one.”)īy the time the show reached its final season, Britta started to be treated more like Meg from Family Guy, except unlike Meg, the audience wasn’t really supposed to feel much sympathy as everyone bashed on her. In season one, there would often be jokes about how Britta and Jeff were the “mom and dad” of the study group, a testament to the idea that they were both considered the cool ones in the group, the most respected.Īs the show went on, however, Britta became increasingly stupid and embarrassing, to the point where the other characters would use her name to mean somebody screwed up. She was the savvy, skeptical foil to Jeff’s lazy, manipulative personality. When Britta was introduced in the pilot episode, she seemed remarkably cool, smart, and put together. Some of my other goals that seemed too far off-like trying to get into OneZero or Human Parts-now seem a little more reachable.Īnd if I can get to a place where I can regularly get work published in these publications, you know what that means for me next, right? The fact that I’ve had so many positive interactions with several GEN editors in the past few days seems like a good sign. On that note, I can only assume that now that I’ve had work published in a major publication like GEN, I will have a slightly easier time pitching to publications like GEN. ![]() The best way to get a pitch accepted by a magazine is to have already had a pitch accepted by other magazines. I’ll be able to commit to longform articles that require a lot of research, and take risks in ways I probably wouldn’t be able to make before.Īlso, a couple weeks ago I wrote this in one of my articles: If I “only” make around $800 or so this month, that should still give me freedom to commit more to freelance writing. However, I’ve never had a spike this big before, so I don’t know what to expect.)Įither way, things are looking good. (Side note: do any Medium writers know where I can find screenshots of stats pages of viral articles? My articles so far usually pan out the same way: there’s an initial big spike, followed by a gradual decline. That ‘Knives Out’ post has made about $330 in its first two days, and I think it’s safe to say it’ll make at least another $200 or so. ![]() Well, I don’t want to jinx anything just yet, but there’s a pretty good chance I’ll be able to make a thousand bucks. Will I succeed? Probably not, but it’s nice to have goals to strive for. I ended up making $215 in October, and my goal is to make $1,000 off Medium in November. Still cool though!)Īlso, remember how in my last newsletter, I wrote this: (Which sounds amazing, until you remember that I only had about ten people subscribed to it before that article took off. A recent article of mine went viral and got picked up by GEN, so in just the past few days I’ve gained around eighty Twitter followers and have tripled the number of people following my newsletter.
